Way back when I was working on the embroidery for Lucy's Red PC dress I decided I was going to enter it in the county fair. It was worn for pictures and the movie and what-not and a hole was noticed in the lining of the sleeve.

The movie costume has culottes under the red overskirt so we know I had the right idea. But skirts are so much more Narnian, and this is something she'll wear far more often than the rest of the outfit.

So I worked really hard putting the embroidery pattern on the wrong side of the fabric. Only when I went to start stitching did I realise that it was beyond my capabilities to stitch the actual pattern on what would be the 'wrong side' and have the messy version of my work right under my figertips where i could see it.

To get the loops (for the back lacing) evenly spaced I took a strip of newspaper, measured with my ruler and marked where the loops were to go, then stitched the 2" pieces of yarn into place on the paper. Then I went back and folded the yarn over to make the loop. The completed loops and paper was then stitched to the fabric.

Technically, when one puts scissor to fabric, that is the "point of no return" but today I bound off the armholes and sewed up the side seams of the underdress. So now it is a jumper, waiting to be hemmed.

But it's practically done! I'm so excited!

Next step... cut out the corset and figure out how to mark where to embroider...

Remember the lovely ribbon I bought off the Christmas clearance rack? And the fact that I bought it when I thought a prettily textured gold ribbon was all I needed? Well, there was only 9 ft. of ribbon on the spool. Which would make approximately 3 ft. of braided trim. Only... I cut it before I did the math. Oops.

Even during the initial fittings of the muslin, before a skirt was attached, I had a sneaking suspicion that making the underdress a slip-on dress was not as easy as I hoped. After all, it was seamed to sit close to the body, wasn't made of stretch fabric, and didn't fit over the hips. Also, the chainstiched basting came out when we took the muslin ( Read more... )
